All About me-an introduction.

All About Me!

Hello everyone!  My name is Alyson DeLaney-nice to meet you all!

I am a blended preschool teacher in Community School District 300.  My district is the fourth largest in the state-and I teach at Gilberts Elementary School.  This is my sixth-year teaching preschoolers.  In those six years, I have taught in three different elementary schools.

I LOVE my job!  I have always loved children (I even have one of my own!) and I seem to be able to relate to the children and families of our youngest learners-our "littles".   I remember when I told my dad that I was going to school to get my teaching degree-he said, “I knew it”.  When I asked him how he knew, he said that for as long as he could remember-whenever we went to a family gathering or a place where there were young children, I was always the first one on the floor playing with them.

I have always wanted to be a teacher and can remember playing "school" with my sisters when we were younger.  One of the best times of the school year for me as a child was those last few days of school when the teachers would go through all the leftover "dittos" they had and allow us to take them home! Although it took me an exceptionally long time to achieve my goal of being a teacher, I have never been prouder of the profession I chose. I feel like, after six years, I am finally confident enough to be the teacher I want to be.

I live in South Elgin with my husband Keith, our daughter Hannah, age 20, our dogs Maizy and Carter, and Hannah's rabbit-Ruthie.

I have been married for 28 years and I turned the “BIG 50” this year in June. Two milestones that I am immensely proud of.  Some of my favorite pastimes are sewing and reading.  I also love to bake, hike, and fish. I enjoy doing puzzles, scary movies, spending time with my family, and working with my dogs.

I am excited about this course-it's my next to the last one before I will have my Master's Degree in ESL and Technology.

Good luck to everyone!

  1. Hi Alyson!

I loved reading your story. I think it is fantastic that you decided to go and get your teaching degree to pursue your passion. I am the same way; no matter where I am, people can always find me hanging out with the "littles." They just bring so much joy.

I can imagine it is difficult yet fun teaching in a blended Pre-K room. At my school, we have two wings - one is completely Special Ed K-3 while the other is all blended Pre-K. You definitely have your hands full, so I give you a lot of credit for that. It must be extremely rewarding!

Congratulations on turning 50 and celebrating 28 years of marriage. I hope to be in a similar position one day.

I'm excited to see more of your posts and hear more about your teaching experiences throughout this course.

  2. Hello, Alyson and welcome! Can I just say I caught myself literally shaking my head in agreement when you talked about getting leftover dittos as a child and thinking it was almost as good as Christmas?! I felt the same way! For me, part of my "always wanted to be a teacher" story was the fact that my dad was the school board president of my school and during the nighttime board meetings I would be in the teacher's lounge AMAZED that the teachers had books with the answers in them (i.e. teacher's editions). Another similarity is that I just turned 50 this past May (COVID ruined my big plans), my twins will turn 20 in November, and next Friday my husband and I will be married 26 years :). Small world. Looking forward to learning with you this fall.

    1. Yes, COVID also ruined my 50th birthday plans as well...I was supposed to be on a beach in Hawaii!! It's still on my someday list!
My daughter turned 20 in May-she's living at home with us and going to school remotely. She just started a job at Menards as a cashier. Not her career choice, but she needed to get out of the house! (for both our sakes! :0.

  3. Hi Alyson! Thank you for sharing your story! I think it is amazing that you went for your teaching degree. I can feel your passion for teaching as well with your preschoolers. When I was getting my Bachelor's Degree, my one professor told us that if you are a teacher, it was because you were meant to be teacher. Teaching is a challenging job, but it is the most rewarding. I also liked to play school when I was younger. I would get so excited that there would be indoor recess because I would be able to play school. Also congratulations on turning 50 and 28 years of marriage! That is truly amazing! I look forward to reading more of your posts and learning from you.
